Planning your staycation with the best Broome accommodation

Planning your staycation with the best Broome accommodation

As a Broome local, you already know why tourists flock here – the laid-back vibe, tropical climate, and a wealth of experiences right on our doorstep.

But if you think about it, why should they have all the fun?

Planning a staycation in Broome is your chance to get away, experience all the fun stuff that Broome has to offer, and have a holiday without leaving town.

Here are some things to do that allow you to get out and experience the town like a tourist—with all the benefits of your local knowledge.

Start by seeing the sights

There are things to do in Broome, and then there are the touristy things to do in Broome.

But it’s these things that make our town famous.

So for your Broome staycation, start by experiencing some of the things that make Broome, well, Broome. The things that you may not have gotten around to doing, and perhaps a few things that tourists might not necessarily hear about.

Soak in Coconut Well

As a local, you’re probably more likely to be around during the wet season. So if you’re looking for respite from the heat, head to Coconut Well.

Just 20 minutes out of town, this sandy, rocky beachside experience transforms at high tide. When the tide is higher than nine metres, it pours over the dunes and fills up the landscape into a turquoise-blue lagoon.

For extra adventure points, once the tide comes in – bring your pool floatie, set yourself up at the mouth of the lagoon, and join in the ride as the tide rises and floats you on up towards the parking area.

Check out the crocs at Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park

No tourist trip to Broome is complete without checking out Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. So, why wouldn’t we do the same?

Enter through the jaws of a giant fibreglass saltwater crocodile and learn all about these intimidating creatures. Be sure to catch a daily feeding tour and see some of the biggest crocs in Australia as they tear into their meal. It’s quite a sight to behold.

History on your doorstep

Broome is home to one of the most unique sights in the world. You no doubt know about them. But have you actually been out to see them in person?

Just out in Roebuck Bay, when the tide is right, you can find the wrecks of six Catalina and Dornier flying boats. Partially submerged in the sand and mud, these flying boats are what remains of 15 that were destroyed in a raid by the Japanese air force during the Second World War. It’s a rare collection of military and cultural heritage.

To get there, the tide needs to be below 0.86m. Walk out from Town Beach, 1km along the mud flats. To ensure you have time to return, plan for a 1-hour walk out, and a 1-hour walk back.

Look to the skies

You might have gazed up at the night sky a few times. But as humans, just how much do we know about the stars above us?

We’ve all looked up and marvelled at the stars, and particularly in Broome, gazing up at the night sky is an awe-inspiring experience.

If you’re here in the dry season, specifically from April onwards, Greg Quicke’s Astro Tours are a unique way to learn more about the skies above us. These practical, educational events run for 2.5 hours, and are just 13km outside of town, next to the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. Rather than just passively looking at the stars, you’ll learn their names, learn about the constellations, and be shown where to find planets and see them up close.

The tours are run by Greg Quicke himself, Australia’s famous “Space Gandalf,” and bookings are essential.

Make it a staycation at the Mangrove Hotel

Doing touristy activities is fun, but to make it really feel like a holiday, make it a staycation and book into a hotel for a few days.

The Mangrove Hotel is the perfect Broome accommodation to base yourself from. A relaxed stay away from home, where you don’t have to clean or cook. Choose from 60 beautiful guest rooms, surrounded by lush tropical gardens. Dive into one of two swimming pools, or relax on the cabanas with a book.

And, as a local, we’ve got you covered. Our Locals of Leisure package is a special that’s just for you.

Get 25% off our best available rate, with daily drink vouchers, unrestricted pool access, early check-in, and more. It’s an adventure in your own backyard that’s definitely locals only.

Eat your way around Broome

Broome has some great culinary options, and on your staycation, you deserve to treat yourself.

While some options may close during the wet season, there’s still plenty to indulge in.

Head on up to our very own Bay Club. Our Broome outdoor bar and restaurant has expansive views out over Roebuck Bay, featuring a range of dishes made with the best produce the Kimberley has to offer. From a classic pub beer burger, and fish and chips, to Abrolhos scallops, tuna poke bowls, and a range of pizzas to suit every mood.

We’re also currently running a Food Series at the Bay Club during the wet season. In February, the Mangrove goes Tex Mex – with a specially-crafted Tex Mex menu, inspired by the Southwest. With craft beer and plenty of margaritas, plus live music on Saturday nights, it’s something you don’t want to miss.

See the menu for February’s Tex Mex Food Series here. Up next, we’ll be going German in March! Stay up-to-date on our socials to make sure you don’t miss out.

You don’t need to travel far to get away and enjoy yourself

This summer, why not treat yourself to a staycation in your own town?

From exploring the town, discovering history on your doorstep, or learning about the skies above us, there’s plenty to do that makes Broome feel new again.

And as a local, the best place to do it is by booking a room at our Broome accommodation.
