Broome’s Sun Pictures is a look back in time

Sun Pictures has been a cornerstone of entertainment for over 110 years, but its roots stretch back even further.

Originally built during Broome’s thriving pearling era, the Yamasaki family acquired the building in 1903. They transformed it from a general store known for selling imported Asian goods into a cultural hub.

Passionate about theatre, the Yamasakis converted part of the space into a Japanese playhouse, where they hosted traditional Noh performances.

In 1913, prominent pearler Ted Hunter saw the building’s potential and purchased it, envisioning a new purpose. He transformed it into a picture theatre, giving birth to a historic landmark.

On December 6, 1916, Sun Picture Gardens officially opened its doors and has enchanted audiences with films ever since.

The Sun Pictures experience

Walking into Sun Pictures isn’t like any other cinema. It’s nostalgic and inviting, from the corrugated tin exterior to the high wood-beamed ceilings and the vintage canvas deck chairs.

It feels like you’re stepping back in time and enjoying the timeless beauty of Australian cinema as it used to be.

Lush green trees frame the screen, and you can watch the sunset behind it as the films play. The seats are warmed by the tropical breeze, with the distant hum of Broome in the background.

Occasionally, the film screening is punctuated by a plane flying in low overhead due to the cinema being directly in the nearby airport’s flight path—an experience you won’t get anywhere else in the world.

What to know before you go

While the space retains its old-world charm, seeing a film at Sun Pictures Cinema in Broome is modern.

There are two sessions available each night. You can buy tickets online, or they can be purchased at the door about 45 minutes before the night’s first session.

The seating is first in, first served, and there’s a concession stand where you can buy classic cinema snacks and drinks.

As it’s an open-air cinema, it can get breezy, so be sure to bring a jumper or blanket. And, as the seating is all undercover, Sun Pictures is proud to screen films in rain, hail, or shine.
